 What Is This Oscar Awards and What Is the Beginning of It?

Academy Awards, popular name is Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. They are given once a year by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) which based from California. This ceremony which happen in USA is also important for different movies from different places all over the world. This awards are considered like an international achievement in the cinema world.

First Academy Awards are introduced in a meeting at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California. There were 270 people in the meeting and it taked 15 minutes. First Academy Awards is the only Academy Award that don’t broadcast on radio and television

“Oscars” Where Does This Name Come From and What Does Oscar Statuette represent?

Actually the orijinal name of Oscars is “Academy Award of Merit”. There is no certain information about where this name came from but there are different rumors. One of this rumors is about Margaret Herrick who is librarian and executive of Academy. She thought that the Oscar Statuette looks like her uncle Oscar, so in this way it came to this day as Oscars. The name of Oscars has not been used until 1939.

Cedric Gibbons, art director of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, designed the Academy Award Statuette. The Stat

uette is a Knight who is holding a sword. This Knight is standing on the five-piece real of film. This five pieces represents actors, movie writers, directors, producers and technicians. The high of the award is 34 cm, the weighs is 3,85 and it covered with 24 karat-gold.

 

It is forbidden to sell the Academy Awards if you really want, you can just sell it to Academy for one dolar.

What are Criterions to Win Oscars?

Of course there are some criterions to win Oscars. First of all film must open in previous calendar year, from midnight at the start of January 1 to midnight at the end of December 31, then it must play for seven consecutive days to qualify, and film must be feature-lenght, defined as a minimum of 40 minutes.

Interesting Informations and Events about Oscars.

After all of this technical information about Oscars, I want to give you some different kind of informations and intersting events which happened during the Oscar ceremonies.

Wings (1927) is a silent movie. It won the Academy Award in the first ceremony of Academy Awards.

The Awards that given for actors and actress are best actor award, best actress award, best supporting actor award and best supporting actress award. There is no any movie that could win all of this Oscars, but just two movie won three of them. This movies are A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and Network (1976).

Katherine Hepburn is the actress who won the most of Oscars.

There is just one person in the world who won both Oscar and Nobel. George Bernard Show who won Nobel in 1925, won the best adapted screenplay award with adaption of play called Pygmalion to cinema in 1938.

Alice Brady won the best supporting actress for her role in In Old Chicago, in 1938’s Oscar ceremony, but Brady couldn’t join to ceremony because of her illnes, instead of her a man took the award in the ceremeony. The interesting thing in this story is still no one know that who this guy is and what he did with award.

In the last ceremony of Academy Award Actor Will Smith took to the stage and slapped Chris Rock because of a joke he made about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. “Jada, GI Jane 2, I can’t wait to see it.” Said Rock in a skit to the Oscars audience seated in the Dobly Theatre, Los Angeles. 50-year-old Jada seemed visibly annoyed, rolling her eyes at the comment. But it was husband Will Smith who decided to take action. Arising from his seat and storming the stage. Will proceeded to slap Chris Rock around the face in front of a visibly shocked crowd. Then he apologised  to the Academy , his fellow acting nominees and Chris Rock.
